Federal Reserve Governor Jerome Powell warned Sunday about the impact of a politicized Fed and made a broader call for the defense \u200cof democratic institutions in his first public remarks since the end of his eight-year stint as head of the central bank.<\/p>\n
\u201cDemocratic institutions take much time, effort, and patience to build but can be torn down all too quickly,\u201d Powell said in remarks \u200bprepared for delivery as he accepted the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, given by \u200bthe John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is essential that we preserve what is good about \u2060these institutions, even as we strive to improve them,\u201d said Powell, who included the Fed along with the \u200bcourts and universities as among the core institutions key to the country\u2019s success and standing in the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cLike \u200bmany other institutions, the Fed has been undergoing a stress test,\u201d Powell said, which in the central bank\u2019s case has included efforts by President Donald Trump to fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook, calls for Powell\u2019s resignation and a criminal probe of Powell.<\/p>\n
Powell\u2019s \u200bterm as chair formally ended on May 15. His successor, Kevin Warsh, was sworn in as Fed chair on \u200bMay 22. Powell has decided to continue as a Fed governor in part because of what he regards as ongoing threats \u200cto \u2060the Fed\u2019s independence, a decision that effectively prevents Trump from appointing another member to the Fed board for now.<\/p>\n The Fed\u2019s structure is meant to allow it to make monetary policy decisions free of political considerations, and \u201cthese protections have served the public well, and administrations from both parties have respected them,\u201d Powell said. \u201cIf any administration finds a \u200bway to remove Fed officials \u200bover policy differences, then \u2060future administrations will do so as well.
